Wendell Gilley

Wendell Gilley started carving birds in the 1930's after being fascinated by a collection of miniature bird carvings he saw at the New England Museum of Natural History in Boston. He had gone to the museum to visit the massive collection of taxidermy dioramas (his primary hobby at the time) but was profoundly inspired to try carving birds himself. As his collection grew and his skills improved he began driving from his home on Mount Desert Island, Maine, to the original Abercrombie and Finch in New York and selling the birds for $3.75. Mr. Gilley estimates he created over ten thousand works from 1931-1983. The Wendell Gilley Museum in Southwest Harbor, Maine houses hundreds of Mr. Gilley's sculptures, as well as gives classes on the art of carving.

Saturn Press

Saturn Press is a two person card company on Swans Island, Maine. They have no website or web-store. The only way to get these beautiful cards is through their old fashioned catalogue or if you are lucky your local bookstore or museum might carry them. All the prints are done the old fashioned way from beginning to end, from a pencil drawing to a color reduction print, printed on a press nearly 100 years old. Computers are not used in the process at all.

Grandfather Frost

These "New Year" cards are from Soviet Russia circa the late 1950's and early 60's. It was (and still is) popular in Russia to appropriate western images and ideas about Christmas to New Years because religious holidays were not permitted in the USSR and New Years was the only holiday not associated with communist ideology. The card's space and satellite imagery coincide with the launch of Sputnik in 1957. I love the one where grandfather frost has horses AND a spaceship.

Bookplates are one of the earliest examples in which a form of branding which is/was serving the practical purpose of claiming ownership over one's library, evolved into it's own artform. I love the limitations of the bookplate (size, text, personal message) and how these "rules" free the artists and designers who create bookplates. Check out Mussolini's bookplate above, creepy.

USSR Matchbox

These beautifully designed Russian matchboxes (1950's-1960's) were born out of the same minds that produced the propaganda of Stalin and Lenin's USSR. The techniques and palate of the iconic posters of communist ideals, workers utopia, and the dictators themselves spilled over into all disciplines of design of the period and continued for decades. This way of marketing and illustrating gave rise to the corporate branding and identity of today (not to mention the last 50 years). Steven Heller has a great book out on this subject called Iron Fists.

It has been very windy lately.

Holding a spool of string, being the anchor.

My grandmother has a copy of this book along with several others intended to distract a house full of ten year old kids. Other subjets covered in her library include treehouse building, trap-making, knot-tying, and how to skin snakes. As a boy I tried to build the kite that looks like an eagle, it didn't look like an eagle but it did fly.

In the name of Halloween and craftsmanship lets celebrate These Taxidermy Dioramas from San Francisco stores Paxton Gate and Loved to Death. Each piece is extremely detailed, from the hand-carved tiny picture frames to mice-sized furniture made of rodent bones.

The Chatterbox

The Chatterbox was a periodical published "for older children" in London from the mid 1870's to the 1940's. These illustrations accompanied stories on history, scientific theory, adventure, and religion. It is nice to be reminded of a pre-photography era when illustrators had so much power in the mind of readers. These illustrations to me are at once awkward, alluring and funny.

Technicolor Fright

Along with picking apples, growing a beard, and carving pumpkins, Fall is also the season for watching scary movies. Horror and science-fiction films have always provided artists and designers with vivid and surreal sources to create images they never would have created otherwise. It is impossible to imagine a movie poster created today without an actor's airbrushed portrait prominently displayed, proof of the films worthiness. These vintage posters communicate the various film's subtleties without the crutch of a beautiful star.

Chainsaw Sculpture

Somewhere between kitsch, rustic beauty, and old world ideals of craftsmanship lies Chainsaw Carving. State fairs, small town gas stations, and the deep woods are good places to find examples of this (mostly) American and Canadian tradition. Something about cutting down a living thing five times older than you and forming it into a smokey the bear statue seems to embody manifest destiny.

With their craftsmanship, detail, weight, and aged beauty, Bookends remind us that owning things made out of plastic kind of sucks.

Around the end of the 16th century books began to be stored vertically. As libraries and monasteries's collections began to grow, weight was needed to keep the volumes from falling off the shelf. Bookends were born out of concern for reader's safety, and grew into the functional beauties that were created in the early 1900's (the bookend's golden age).

Bike-In Movie Series

This First Friday at 8:30 41 Wharf St will be hosting the first Bike-in movie night of an ongoing series. Come watch the classic Jim Jarmusch film Dead Man, as well as the award winning stop-motion animated short Bonefeather. Co-creator of the short, Nathan Gilliss will be be in attendance (all the way from Vancouver) to take your questions, eat popcorn served out of a cart and drink refreshments with you. September in Maine means the COMMON GROUND COUNTRY FAIR. One of my favorite perks of the whole affair is waiting for the release of the annual poster design. This year, it was kind of a miss for me. But I still love looking through the archives to see the chronology of perfected folk art that has come down the chute. Here are a few that make my eyes go all swoonlike.

Yesterday was the third annual PICNIC sale here in Portland. A bountiful mix of vintage, eclectic ephemera, and unique local art was festooned amongst vendors at Lincoln Park. Throw in some summer sun and I was beaming like a button. Here are some of the goods that caught my eye. Stubborn runt that I am, I made a decree to take home one scant item for the day.

Then one became two.

My bounty. A vintage Kodak Brownie, and a dandy Pedal Wench Cycling cap (refurbished from a black weave mini skirt!) How can a guy say no.

FIRE MARK

Somewhat overlooked, I've always been fascinated by FIRE MARKS. A wealth of amazing iconic imagery for sure: they're also a tell piece of human nature. When makeshift fire brigades were more en vogue, each plate depicted a particular company that insured a building. The more money an insurance company had, the bigger the reward for snuffing out those pesky fires. With hands around a waterjug, it's only natural instinct for those fingers to work like divining rods to the nearest well of money.
